it would be easiest if you used Outlook Express or Microsoft Outlook, as your e-mail program, then you just configure either one of those programs with your gmail account information and set the account to be your DEFAULT e-mail
Presto, when you click on an e-mail link either outlook express or Microsoft Outlook would pop-open with g-mail to send the e-mail
